Focus delivers relief items to Takhar province

Afghanistan, October 2016 – Focus Humanitarian Assistance (FOCUS) donated 125 tents and 100 Non Food Item packages to the Governor of Takhar to support 750 Internally Displaced People (IDP) in Kunduz.

The Governor of Takhar, Mohammad Yasin Zia, expressed his gratitude to Focus Humanitarian Assistance and other NGOs who are helping with the response on the ground. “There are over 5,000 people arriving in Taloqan,” he said, “these tents will provide shelter for the IDPs from Kunduz, we cannot let women and children sleep in the open because we do not have enough shelter.”

The tents have been set up in a compound close to Taloqan, which is being used to house the IDPs who have fled Kunduz due to ongoing violence in the city over the last week. The tents were mobilised from FOCUS’ stockpiles in Fayzabad, Badakhshan and funded by the United States (US) Agency for International Development (USAID) Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance, under the FOCUS USAID Community Based Disaster Risk Reduction Programme, of which disaster preparedness is a key component. FOCUS was able to deliver the tents to Takhar within hours of the first IDPs arriving from Kunduz. A further 100 NFI packages were distributed to IDPs through local civil society organisations.

Each of the tents can accommodate a family of six people, and the families also received tarpaulin sheets, blankets and hygiene kits containing soap, shampoo and laundry powder. FOCUS also provided an additional 200 blankets.
